At Advanced Aesthetic Dentistry in downtown Denver, we get it. When you open your mouth to speak, laugh, or sing, you don’t want others to see a glaring reminder of dental work. You want them to see beautiful, natural teeth. That’s why we are proud to offer the latest in modern restoration technology. Tooth-colored fillings are safe, durable, and blend in seamlessly with your natural teeth. No one will ever know you’ve had dental work done.
Before we discuss fillings and restorations, Dr. Paini thinks it’s important that we talk about why patients need fillings in the first place – tooth decay. Tooth decay, or dental caries is one of the most common chronic diseases in America. It affects children more-so than adults, because children do not yet possess the motor skills and the knowledge to properly care for their teeth (that is not to say that adults are immune by any means). Tooth decay occurs when food and/or sugar particles are allowed to remain on teeth, when proper oral hygiene care is not followed. Sugar on the teeth and gums quickly turns into acid that breaks down tooth enamel and causes decay.
If decay is allowed to progress, chances are you will need more than a simple filling to restore it. Inlays/onlays are similar to, but more extensive than fillings, and are used when more than half of the tooth’s biting surface is damaged. Inlays/onlays can actually strengthen your tooth by up to 75%. If more restoration is required than an inlay/onlay, your next option will be a crown. In the unfortunate event that tooth decay is allowed to progress even further, the tooth may not be salvageable and may need to be extracted all together – this is, of course, a last resort. At Advanced Aesthetic Dentistry, our goal is to preserve as much of your natural, healthy teeth as possible, which is why we do our best to detect tooth decay in its earliest stages.
At Advanced Aesthetic Dentistry, we are proud to say we are a mercury-free practice. While many dental offices around the country still use metal to restore teeth, studies have found, and the modern dental community agrees, that mercury is not the best option. First of all, mercury is known to be toxic to the human body, and even in the trace amounts found in metal fillings, we don’t believe it belongs anywhere in or near your mouth. Second, metal fillings are unstable. The material expands and contracts with changes in temperature, and is susceptible to wear and tear, allowing more bacteria to enter, and compromising the integrity and strength of the tooth.
Rather than compromising the tooth’s strength and integrity, tooth-colored restorations actually fortify and strengthen teeth. Tooth-colored resin is bonded to the tooth, creating a tight seal that combats bacteria and prevents further decay. Tooth-colored resin is a much safer alternative to mercury, and is not known to be toxic to the human body in any way. One of the greatest benefits of tooth-colored fillings is fairly obvious – they’re tooth-colored! These are much more aesthetically pleasing than metal restorations, and blend in seamlessly with natural teeth. Tooth-colored restorations are discreet and natural looking.
If you still have metal restorations of dentistry’s past lurking in your mouth, we can safely remove, and replace them with beautiful, safe, and durable tooth-colored fillings or inlays/onlays.
